Food businesses in NSW throw away around 30 per cent of their food. That’s a lot of money going into the bin. Regional Development Australia Southern Inland (RDASI) are partnering with the Southern Region Business Enterprise Centre (SRBEC) to help tackle this food waste problem and help cut business costs.
RDASI has been awarded $58,863 to roll out NSW Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) Love Food Hate Waste ‘Your Business is Food’ program over the next two years. RDASI will deliver the project across the seven Local Government Areas of the Southern Inland Region, commencing in the Southern Highlands.
For those interested in the program, an information session will be held on Tuesday 11th September at 3pm at Bowral Golf Club. This will be a chance for businesses to understand a bit more about the program, before they sign the pledge.
RDASI Project Officer, Camilla Staff acknowledged that food waste is more than just what is thrown in the bin. “It’s certainly a very topical issue at the moment. Apart from the environmental impacts, wasting food wastes money and the considerable energy, water and other resources used to produce it.”
“Interestingly, in the hospitality space, 74% of food waste happens before the food is even sold or served. So, we want to help businesses firstly, identify where they are wasting food and then give them a couple of really simple and effective actions to reduce their food waste,” said Ms Staff.
Businesses will be asked to sign a pledge to reduce their food waste by 20% by the end of the four-month program. All businesses will work with an advisor to conduct a food waste review where they measure and track where their food waste is coming from. The advisor then develops a personalised plan with actions the business can take to avoid food waste. All participating business receive a free kit with posters, an information booklet, and takeaway container stickers.
“The EPA’s pilot program showed that participating businesses reduced food waste by an average of 21%. Some cut their food waste by more than half,” said Ms Staff.
The Love Food Hate Waste grants have been awarded under the NSW EPA’s Organics Infrastructure Fund which forms part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.
