Food businesses in NSW throw away around 30 per cent of their food. That’s a lot of money going into the bin. Regional Development Australia Southern Inland (RDA Southern Inland) are partnering with the Southern Region Business Enterprise Centre (SRBEC) to help tackle this food waste problem and help cut business costs.
RDA Southern Inland has been awarded $58,863 to roll out NSW Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) Love Food Hate Waste ‘Your Business is Food’ program over the next two years. RDA Southern Inland will deliver the project across the seven Local Government Areas of the Southern Inland Region. The program has already commenced in the Southern Highlands and is now coming to Queanbeyan-Palerang.
For those interested in the program, an information session will be held on Tuesday 26th February at 3pm at the Business Enterprise Centre in Queanbeyan. This will be a chance for businesses to understand a bit more about the program, before they sign the pledge.
Your Business is Food launched last year in the Southern Highlands, with a number of businesses signing up to reduce their food waste.
“We had a range of businesses sign up to the program, from local cafes through to outdoor education camps. Each business was quite surprised to learn of their overall waste figures and what this meant for their bottom line,” explains RDA Southern Inland Project Officer, Camilla Staff.
“Our consultant is a trained chef, so she understands what goes on in the kitchen and can provide realistic and simple strategies for businesses to reduce their food waste.”
Businesses will be asked to sign a pledge to reduce their food waste by 20% by the end of the four-month program. All businesses will work with an advisor to conduct a food waste review where they measure and track where their food waste is coming from. The advisor then develops a personalised plan with actions the business can take to avoid food waste. All participating business receive a free kit with posters, an information booklet, and takeaway container stickers.
“The EPA’s pilot program showed that participating businesses reduced food waste by an average of 21%. Some cut their food waste by more than half,” said Ms Staff.
The Love Food Hate Waste grants have been awarded under the NSW EPA’s Organics Infrastructure Fund which forms part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.
