Jindabyne Connect was hosted by Rydges Horizons Snowy Mountains on Thursday 25th January. The networking event in Jindabyne is held monthly and is a chance for businesses to catch up over drinks and nibbles in a relaxed atmosphere. With Australia Day the next day, the town of Jindabyne was buzzing and businesses were in high spirits. Throughout the night, the diversity of Jindabyne residents and their skills were celebrated.
There were seven ‘pitches’ from local businesses and Council members, with all ‘pitches’ emphasising the importance of businesses working together for the better of the town.
Michael Henley, from Henley Property Sales, was the MC for the night and began the formal part of the evening by reminding businesses of the upcoming Winter Olympics and the opportunity to take advantage of this marketing opportunity.
“This is a key time to remind people that we are a winter town”, Michael said.
The first speaker for the night was Andy Willis, from Working from Anywhere in Tathra. Andy helps people to transition their business so they can work from anywhere and spend more time outside of the office. He uses cloud-based tools, such as G Suite, to allow people to access systems wherever they are.
Peter Cottrell, from Eucumbene Trout Farm, made a passionate pitch about tourism in the area and the importance of strong leadership and representation in the industry. According to Peter, Jindabyne is the number one destination for trout farming in NSW. Despite this, just 1% of Jindabyne visitors fish in the area, with Peter expressing concern about the state of ‘limbo’ that the industry is currently in.
Peter finished his pitch with the statement, “turn a day into a stay,” and expressed his desire to meet with the Mayor and Destination NSW to put trout fishing back on the radar.
Next to speak was Paul Corcoran, from Global Compliance Consultancy. Paul has worked on a range of well-known events, including the 2017 Adele Sydney Concert, to develop safety, risk management and emergency plans to ensure the smooth and safe delivery of events. His goal for the region – “to make Jindabyne a venue of choice with promoters.”
Mark Benson spoke about his newly acquired business in Berridale called Alpen Auto Rentals, the largest locally owned car hire business in the Snowy Monaro region. Mark spoke of his desire to work with other businesses in the community to help tourism grow, stating “I cannot make a business work in this region by myself…our business sits in the middle of other businesses in the region”.
Two Council members also attended and spoke at Jindabyne Connect. Councillor Peter Beer from Snowy Monaro Council gave a rundown of activities happening at Council, including their Community Service Plan, the merging of three LGA Planning systems and the $14m dedicated to local projects.
Gary Shakespeare, the Group Manager for Transport and Infrastructure for Snowy Monaro Council, then spoke about the new direction and vision for Council. He spoke about the past, where reports and studies simply ‘sat on the shelf’, and the exciting future ahead, where Council is focused on community engagement, delivery and investment.
“We need infrastructure to support the rise in tourism,” Gary said, highlighting various exciting infrastructure projects in Jindabyne, including the new carpark on Kalkite Street, new car charging car parks and a request to State Government to be a pilot city for the Smart Cities Project.
Olivier Kapetanakos from the Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce concluded the evening by discussing the Snowy Monaro Business Excellence Awards, a partnership between Snowy Monaro Council and the three Chambers of Commerce that celebrates the success of local businesses. Olivier called for applications and offered assistance and mentoring for businesses looking to apply.
