Hilltops businesses embrace digital marketing in 2018

With the support of Hilltops Council, RDA Southern Inland hosted a second retail skills workshop in Young on Wednesday night. The workshop explored digital marketing and customer loyalty, presented by Charmaine Corcoran from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA).

Following a successful retail skills workshop held last year, the follow-up workshop on Wednesday night explored a modern business necessity; social media and digital marketing. The workshop focused on topics such as, the importance of aligning your digital personality with the physical personality of the store, how to develop a social media plan and the power of user generated content. Various case studies were also highlighted, including the successful Cooma retail business, Birdsnest.

Seven businesses from the Hilltops region attended the workshop at Hilltops Council, which was followed by a number of one-on-one consultations with Charmaine Corcoran the following day.

The one-on-one store visits allowed workshop attendees to discuss their marketing strategies with Charmaine and also seek specific advice for their business.

Simone Ward from The Homestead Style in Harden attended the workshop and also had a follow up consultation with Charmaine the following day. After relocating to Harden from Canberra, Simone set up the fashion store about a year ago and is eager to learn and develop her retail skills.

As well as discussing her online marketing strategy, Charmaine provided Simone with some visual merchandising and store layout guidance.

“When you’re working in the store it’s hard to actually see what other people see when they come in, so to have professional feedback has just been invaluable,” Simone said.

Reflecting on the renewed motivation that the workshop gave her, Simone said, “It gave me inspiration and motivation to keep improving and keep trying.  You always get something out of events like these, meeting new people and networking is also a great part of it too.”
